Pharmaceutical Medicine is the medical speciality concerned with the discovery, development, evaluation, licensing and monitoring of medicines as well as the medical aspects of their marketing.
The involvement of physicians in the development of medicines became essential already in the 1960s, providing an interface between the pharmaceutical industry and the medical specialities. In 1989 the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Medicine (FPM) was established within the Royal College of Physicians addressing the demand for medicines to be developed and monitored to the highest scientific and ethical standards. Pharmaceutical Medicine is officially recognised as a medical speciality in the UK.
